What to Expect at a PA Dispensary

Your first visit guide: medical card required, zero sales tax, no edibles for sale, flower is vape-only, and what to bring. Here's how it works.

Before You Arrive

Pennsylvania dispensaries are medical-only. Unlike neighboring states with recreational markets, you cannot walk in and purchase cannabis without prior authorization. Here is what you need:

What to Bring

  • Your PA medical cannabis card (digital or physical) — available from your registry account
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
  • Cash or debit card — credit cards are generally not accepted due to federal banking restrictions

If you don't have a medical card yet, see How to Get a Card — telehealth appointments are available and many patients are certified the same day.

The Dispensary Experience

Check-In

When you arrive, you'll check in with a staff member who will verify your medical card and ID. First-time visitors typically register in the dispensary's system, which takes a few extra minutes. Your remaining allotment (90-day supply) is tracked electronically through the state's system.

Consultation

Pennsylvania dispensaries employ pharmacists or pharmacy technicians who can help you choose products based on your condition, experience level, and preferences. Don't hesitate to ask questions — they're trained to help. First-time patients should mention:

  • Your qualifying condition and what symptoms you want to address
  • Any medications you currently take (for interaction awareness)
  • Your experience level with cannabis (none, some, extensive)
  • Your preferred method of consumption (vape, tincture, topical, etc.)

Shopping

Browse the menu (many dispensaries post menus online) and make your selections. Staff will pull your products and review your order.

Checkout

Pay for your purchases. There is zero sales tax — the price on the label is the price you pay. Your purchase is deducted from your 90-day allotment.

Important Rules to Know

No Edible Sales

Dispensaries Cannot Sell Edibles

Unlike most legal states, Pennsylvania dispensaries are not permitted to sell edibles. You can purchase flower, vapes, concentrates, tinctures, capsules, and topicals. If you want edibles, you are legally permitted to infuse cannabis into food at home using products purchased from a dispensary.

No Smoking — Vape Only for Flower

Pennsylvania law authorizes flower for vaporization only. Smoking (combustion) is not a permitted form of administration under Act 16. Dispensaries sell flower packaged and labeled for use in dry herb vaporizers. While enforcement of the smoking prohibition in private homes is essentially nonexistent, the legal authorization is specifically for vaporization.

90-Day Supply Limit

Patients may possess up to a 90-day supply, calculated as a maximum of 192 units. The dispensary's system tracks your purchases against this limit. If you're approaching your cap, the pharmacist can advise you on timing and allotment management.

No THC Cap

Unlike some medical programs that limit THC potency, Pennsylvania has no THC cap. Patients can purchase products at any potency level available at the dispensary.

Tips for a Great First Visit

  • Check the menu online first — most dispensaries publish menus on their websites or on Leafly/Dutchie
  • Ask about first-time patient discounts — many dispensaries offer 10–20% off your first purchase
  • Start low and go slow — if you're new to cannabis, begin with low-dose products and increase gradually
  • Bring cash — while debit is often accepted, cash ensures no payment issues
  • Ask about loyalty programs — many dispensaries offer points or rewards for returning patients
